1940 Peoria & Eastern Railway capital stock certificate - Illinois railroad

The Peoria & Eastern Railway Company (P&E) was incorporated in 1890 for the purpose of building a railroad between Pekin, Illinois and Indianapolis, Indiana. It also acquired another railroad in bankruptcy that ran this route and quickly surrendered control of the company to the Big Four Railroad (Cleveland, Cincinnati, Chicago & St. Louis Railroad). The Big Four was later acquired by the New York Central Railroad, and control later went to the Penn Central and then Conrail. The P&E surviving trackage is now operated by both Norfolk Southern and CSX. For auction is a stock certificate from the P&E. It is for 100 shares and is dated March 30, 1940.
